Two-Tone Drexel Campaign End Tables

These tables stole my heart from the moment I saw them on Craig's list. You can see the unique beauty and value despite the blue/gray paint.

After some research I learned they are quite valuable and not very common. In original condition, they are a rich, warm wood, with gold and black details. It breaks my heart that someone painted over these gorgeous details.

Scraping off the paint and uncovering this design provides a rush that only fellow furniture lovers and restoration professionals will understand.

After the paint and stripper were completely removed, sadly, the design did not survive.

This set was scooped up quickly by a neighbor & friend who happens to have great taste in decor. She fell in love with them at first site too, as they sat in my garage and I showed them off like a proud furniture maniac.

We discussed a few different options, and she decided a wood, white, and brass combination would fit her home the best. The body was painted a creamy ivory, and the drawer-fronts were given a coat of General Finishes Java Gel Stain.

You can still see a ghost of the former beautiful detail under the stain.

Funny story...those gorgeous legs aren't brass. They're made of wood. I was so preoccupied with how to remove gold spray paint from brass, that I didn't realize they weren't actually made of brass until I tapped them with my fingernail and it didn't make that "ting" of metal. Huh.

So next time...I will spill my secrets of how I made a tacky, dull, gold spray-paint finish look like beautifully-aged brass.

  2. Hi Colleen!
I loved that you restored these tables back to their original beautiful state! Everyone is so paint happy these days, though I like a new fresh coat of paint, sometimes people can get a little carried away to cover up the beautiful wood details. Thanks for partying with us at Talented Tuesday! Loved the finished product! :)
    Cheers,
